The oil filter, also known as the oil strainer, removes impurities such as dust, metal particles, carbon deposits, and soot particles from the engine oil to protect the engine.
There are two types of oil filters: full-flow and bypass. Full-flow filters are connected in series between the oil pump and the main oil gallery, filtering all lubricating oil that enters the main gallery. Bypass filters are connected in parallel with the main oil gallery and only filter the lubricating oil pumped by the filter pump.
